Day 5: Restaurant Review

Review of The Mixx
by Jude

Want a change from sandwich chains like Jimmy Johns or Subway?  Go to The Mixx. Their menu offers delicious sandwiches and savory salads.  The service could be better, but overall the restaurant was very good. The environment is calm and quiet.  The sandwiches have delicious doughy bread the best deli meat ever. The salad menu consist of rich juicy salads.

The inside of The Mixx has a modern flair that you can't get at many other restaurants. You will not find it to be a scary or dark bar. It is a fun and kind environment. You will want to stay and eat forever.

The Mixx has beverages like Coke products and homemade lemonade. Desserts consist of cookies and smoothies.  The food at The Mixx will almost always fill you up. The Mixx also provides ceiling speakers and fountain drinks.

I give The Mixx a five out of five stars, A+++++++, ten out of ten.  It is my new favorite sandwich place.

Day 4: KCUR

Teacher’s note: On Thursday, students listened to podcasts and discussed the attributes that make professional podcasts successful. Then they created their own podcasts, focusing on a topic meaningful to them. Students practiced monitoring their volume, pitch, and speed to optimize their vocal deliveries. Here is Jude's performance:

Later that day, students toured KCUR studios in Kansas City. As their kind and knowledgeable host, Donna Vestal—director of content strategy—provided background information on public radio introduced the students to KCUR announcer Linda Sher.

Director of Community Engagement Ron Jones then had each student record a promo for the popular KCUR program Up To Date. You can hear Jude's promo below.

Day 3: KCPT

Teacher's Note: On Wednesday, students took a tour of the KCPT studios in Kansas City, learning what distinguishes public television from its commercial counterpart. With those differences in mind, each student wrote and directed a public service announcement. Here is Jude's.

Day 2: KU School of Journalism

MEDIA MANIA VISITS KU SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM

LAWRENCE, Kan. — On June 7, seven students at the Barstow Media Mania camp went to KU School of Journalism in Lawrence, Kan.  They took a tour of the Stauffer-Flint building, which is one of the buildings where young journalists learn.

The tour was given by KU Academic Advisor Ashley Gomez.  She has been working at KU since 2007 and has a master's degree in higher education administration.  She enjoys her job because she loves to help students with a variety of issues related to academics, dorm life, and homesickness.

The tour did not just give information on journalism, it gave information on all kinds of media, like TV, radio, producing, directing, and sportscasting.

A student that went on the tour named Kyle said that his favorite part of the tour was learning about the environment and jobs at the school.

Day 1: The Jungle Book Movie Review

Review of The Jungle Book
by Jude K.

Want a fun movie for the whole family? The Jungle Book is the movie to see.  Jon Favreau (director) and Walt Disney Pictures bring an amazing animated film to life. There was no actor better chosen to play Mowgli.  Neel Sethi brought comedy, drama, and intensity to the movie.  Bill Murray also brought a hilarious performance to the role of Baloo, Mowgli's new friend.  This might not surpass Murray's work in Caddyshack, but it is still amazing.  The script of the movie disappointed me. A movie this good should have better writing.

The plot of the story is that the man cub Mowgli is being hunted by the deadly tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba). Mowgli is currently living with the wolves, but staying there endangers them.  He then leaves. In the rising action, Mowgli encounters the snake Kaa (Scarlett Johansson), who tells him why Shere Khan wants him dead.  Scarlett Johansson gives a mysterious performance.

Later in the movie, Mowgli gets taken by monkeys to the monkey king King Louie (Christopher Walken), who asks for the man-made gift of fire.

My favorite character, Bagheera (Ben Kingsley), saves Mowgli with the the help of Baloo. While being saved, Mowgli finds out that Shere Khan killed Akela, the wolf leader, to draw Mowgli back to the wolf den to kill him.

My overall rating for this movie is an A-.
